The New Accommodation FacilityOur Vision
The Trust has undertaken to build an additional accommodation facility as demand for accommodation was continuing to grow. This has now been completed and was opened for patients in March, 2008. We now have 26 family units and studio units.
Why did we need to expand?
Ranui House was almost daily turning patients and their families away with 'Little Ranui' always full to capacity.
The Canterbury District Health Board and the Ministry of Health predict increasing centralisation of specialist health services creating a need for more patient and family accommodation in close proximity to the hospital.
There will be more out-patient treatment in the future increasing the need for short term accommodation for out-of-town families.
The ability to transfer patients in recovery to a safe care facility frees bed space. This means the technical resources of the hospital can be used to improve the level of service provided to everyone in need.
Christchurch Women's Hospital has also now been incorporated onto the Christchurch Public Hospital site creating further pressure on the need for accommodation for families.
Hagley Hostel (the old nurses home) also used to provide short-term accommodation but has now closed.
