About the Trust

The Trust was established in 1990 to raise funds to help build the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Christchurch Hospital and to build and operate an accommodation facility nearby.

Twenty-six fundraising groups were set up throughout the South Island. The appeal was launched in February 1991 and $2.5 million was raised in the first 18 months.

The Otago and Southland Area Health Boards also made donations. The Unit was opened freehold in December 1991 and its design is of a world class standard.

Early in 1991 we were fortunate to purchase the Ranui site. It was decided to remove the existing building and to build a new three storey accommodation facility. Construction started in July 1992 and the house was operational in February 1993. Increasing demand for accommodation saw the Trust add a fourth storey to Ranui House in 1995.

In 1996 the Trust purchased two properties adjacent to Ranui House for the purpose of future accommodation development.

A feasibility study was carried out in 2004 and it determined that further accommodation was indeed needed.  Construction commenced mid October, 2006 on the 18 apartment building and was completed March, 2008 at a cost of $7 million.  Amazingly this building was opened freehold.

The Trusts main function now is to run the two houses and to ensure that the Trust has sufficient funds to operate Ranui, maintain a high standard of accommodation and care, and provide patient support.

Funds are required to continue the programmes supported by the Trust. These finances come from fundraising and donations. The Trust does not receive any government funding. If you, your family, or friends would like to make a donation or a bequest, it would be greatly appreciated.
